What Is Securities-Based Lending?

Securities-based lending allows investors to borrow against the value of their investment portfolios without selling their holdings. In other words, rather than liquidating appreciated assets (and triggering potential capital gains taxes), you can pledge your stocks, bonds, or mutual funds as collateral to secure a loan or line of credit.

This type of loan is often referred to as a Securities-Based Line of Credit (SBLOC) or a Portfolio Line of Credit (PLOC). In both cases, the investor maintains ownership of their portfolio — and continues to benefit from dividends, interest, and market appreciation — while gaining immediate access to liquidity.

How It Works

The process is relatively simple:

  1. Establish the collateral: You pledge eligible securities in a brokerage account to the lender.
  2. Determine loan value: The lender typically offers between 50% and 95% of the market value of your portfolio, depending on the risk and composition of your holdings.
  3. Access your funds: Once approved, you can draw from the line of credit much like a home equity line — for investments, business opportunities, real estate, or personal needs.
  4. Maintain your collateral: You must keep your portfolio above a required loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. If your securities drop in value, you may face a margin call, requiring you to add funds or allow the lender to liquidate assets.

Why Investors Use It

  • Avoid Selling and Taxes: Borrowing against your portfolio means you can access cash without realizing capital gains.
  • Liquidity for Opportunities: Provides quick access to capital for investments, real estate purchases, or business ventures.
  • Low Interest Rates: Since loans are fully secured, rates are often lower than unsecured loans or credit cards.
  • Flexibility: You can repay at your own pace and continue earning returns on your investments.

The Risks Involved

While securities-based lending offers clear advantages, it’s not without risk.

  • Market Volatility: If your portfolio’s value falls, you might have to deposit additional funds or face forced liquidation of your assets.
  • Over-Leverage: Borrowing too aggressively can magnify losses if the market turns against you.
  • Limited Use: Many lenders prohibit using SBLOC funds to purchase more securities, to avoid amplifying risk exposure.

SBLOC vs. Margin Loan

Both involve borrowing against securities, but there are key differences:

  • A margin loan is primarily used to buy more securities — essentially borrowing to invest — and is regulated under Regulation T by the Federal Reserve.
  • A Securities-Based Line of Credit, on the other hand, is designed for non-investment purposes (like funding a business, purchasing property, or personal spending) and generally offers more flexible repayment terms.

When It Makes Sense

Securities-based lending works best for investors who:

  • Hold a diversified, high-quality portfolio
  • Need short-term liquidity without selling assets
